  On The Run

Tramps like us

baby we were born to run

The Boss

Today is gonna be one of those days (why else do you think I'm up this early!).

I still have some laundry to start, then head off to my Aikido class.

From there, I'll be heading out to Lancaster to see an anti-war installation and take a few pics too.

May duck my head into a B&N and then onto visiting with my Aunt; she has some CD's for me and likely a nice dinner (or pizza), we'll likely go to church and I'll head home to finish my laundry and maybe start editing my pics.

You see--I have an inventory at 7AM tomorrow and another one at 5PM the same do. So no Steelers game:(

  Somethings Cooking?
OK, something weird's going on.

I've been on a buzz of some sort since yesterday. This is weird because usually this happens as the result of me doing something; getting a project done, writing a poem, or something else.

But this seems to be coming from within me, not from without. Guess I'm just gonna have to ride this out!

  A Journey Within
"Where are you going?"

"For a walk in the woods". That was a likely dialog that Bill Bryson had to go through when he decided to try and hike the 'AT'. This 2100 mile trail basically traverses the Eastern US from Georgia to Maine.

A Walk In The Woods is Mr. Bryson's account of this journey. From the planning to getting an old friend to join him to thier decision to quit in Maine.

What was weird about the book is that he seemed to spend much of it complaining about weather, food, his companion, and other concerns. He also digresses a lot about the Forest Service, the Trail, the National Parks System and other things.

There were some adventures, including an annoying traveller, an encounter with some sort of animal, a snowstorm, a stream and other delays.

What fascinated me about this was that this trip seemed as much a journey inward as along the trail. He seemed to have learned a lot about himself. When he needed to take time off, he seemed to be experiencing some "withdrawal" from hiking.

If you want an account of a "thru-hike" don't pick this book up (he only completed about 1/3 of the trail), but if you want an honest look at the difficulties that one faces and what a good walk can do for the psyche. Then give this book a try.

  Missing Links
I'd like to think that I've touched a few lives in my thirty years, and that a few folks have touched mine.

But what happens when it seems that the feeling may not be mutual.

OK, this tale begins 16 years ago when I was a freshman in High School. We did an "Artist in Residence" program where our school had a dancer a painter and a musician come in to work with selected students. I selected the musician and she selected me!

I wasn't until now that I realized that she may have been the most accomplished of the group. This is from her Bio:

Michele's unique and distinctively moody music was quickly noticed and she began to land jobs composing for theater and television. Harrisburg animator Fred Miles started using Michele's compositions for many of his creations and Michele also worked part-time assisting Fred with cell painting and animation filming. Together they created perhaps some of the most famous television IDs ever, the early award-winning MTV station identification animations. It was Michele's music that was establishing MTVs early brand identity.

Radio stations also took notice and Michele's music, still without vocals, and she began to get airplay particularly in Europe. Michele became an ASCAP member, saw royalties from airplay and was garnering international reviews. In 1985 Eurock Magazine crowned Michele "America's premiere female synthesist." Her music was experimental yet versatile and could be heard in a wide range of venues, from PBS program openings, to children's TV cartoons, to dance troupes in Budapest.

In 1987 Michele was interviewed in a profile about her music for Susquehanna People hosted by Mary Haverstick. Mary was looking to move into creative filmmaking and Michele had experience on film crews in addition to her scoring work. . . . In 1988 Michele moved to Lancaster and together they founded Haverstick Films.

The story then picks up in 1991, with her time at my High School left out. I guess she either forgot about it or didn't feel it merited notice.

If it's the second, I feel that I somehow failed. I'd like to think that I at least made a lasting impression:(

Of course, with me living only 45 minutes away from her. I'd like to for just one brief moment be able to stand with her again. Just like I did on an October night, with my fist raised like a triumphant athlete!

One day--maybe. . .

  Worlds Apart.
You know, once in awhile, something happens that reminds you that the Internet can be a way to bring people and ideas together that even ten years ago would have been impossible.

This tale begins with me just surfing around the web and alighting on the web page of a young artist from Belgium. Somehow one of her drawings became the inspiration for a poem.

Small problem, so it seemed. I kinda linked to the picture without asking first:( A day later, my conscience got the better of me and I decided to e-mail her about what I had done. I figured either she'd like it or I'd simply have to unlink the picture.

Well--she liked the poem:) I even asked her to peruse some of my work and see if maybe anything I've written can inspire her!

Amazing, that two people from different countries and different worlds could link up. Maybe art is a "universal language" too:)

  My Next Adventure?
A Walk In The Woods is coming along well. His journey along the Appalacian Trail has become as much a journey into himself as a journey across the trail.

He's also seeing America from a unique perspective, as an American who lived overseas for years and as an American seeing America at ground level.

Well his journey has given me a crazy idea for something to do next year! Harrisburg PA has a trail of its own. It's about 20 miles long, so it could be done in one day (I walked 8 miles in NYC, and likely did 15-20 a day when I was in Europe with my Sr. Class).

I'd actually "train" for this as well; try and build up my strength and endurance, learn how to use a map and compass, and any other stuff I may feel necessary to know.

Equipment would be simple, pair of nice hiking boots, and my Sierra Club daypack to hold food, water, snacks and maybe my digital camera.

I'd also be able to see the city of Harrisburg at ground level and at a walking pace.

More to follow.

  Update
8-5-2005

Miami Vice: I gotta give credit to a co-worker for this. Don Johnson reprises his character and either Will Smith or Bill Bellamy(who was in a short-lived "Vice"-esque program called Fastlane) replaces a dead or retired Philip Michael Thomas in a variation on the "Old Cop/Young Cop" story set to the beat of Miami.

  Why Not?
My car's radio is on the blink, it won't pick up stations. I think it's either the antenna or as a co-worker put it "A wire got jiggled".

My CD player works though, so for the last few weeks I've been going through my CD collection. Alas, I've exhausted this collection and with money for a few months a bit tight. I've decided to start hitting up the local library for books on CD.

First one A Walk In The Woods, about a guy who decides to walk the Appalacian Trail. This hiking trail bascially traverses the Eastern part of the US; running from Maine to Georgia.

Might be fun!
