One Day My Mind Opened Up

  Play On!
In a perfect world, I'd be on my way to an interview with a web dev company in Maryland that specializes in "progressive" non-profits and other like-minded groups and companies.

Alas, we live in a world where perfection is in many cases the order of the day. A world where using some "nonstandard protocol" pulls the rug out from under you.

But I kinda may have seen this coming, as I've been working on an interactive map for the Cumberland County Library System that once I get it done I will see about demonstrating. I also have found four other positions that may call for my skills; three in or around Pittsburgh and the other in Cincinatti.

I'm not going to let this little detour slow me down and as a song says.

I guess I'll keep a walkin'
with my head held high.

I'll keep moving on,
but only God knows why.

  Possibility

Now I'd give anything to feel love from a child's heart again

Miranda Lambert

Yes, it's that song again. But I spent part of yesterday morning at my Aunt's house with my Brother, his Wife and their Son (my Nephew). I got to see a glimpse of one of the few times in ones life where everything seems possible.

I went outside and played, and watched my Brother try to impart what our Dad had taught us about how to throw and hit a baseball. I watched the little guy take in what he saw around him, and be engrossed in a few TV shows.

But the whole time, even when eating, he had the look of wonder about him. Like the whole world was his for the taking.

Alas, reality sooner than we'd like to admit seems to put limits on this wonder--at least for most people.

There For The Grace Of God Go I
Well I think some sorta odd syncronicity is at work again.

Yesterday I had an inventory that started at 5AM, and I managed to negotiate to get someone to come in and replace me for the last hour of my shift at FedEx Ground.

So I get up and do the inventory, and we actaually get out at a decent hour. So I have time to work on a test I needed to take for a web dev job in Maryland. I get one of the questions in and figure that we may get done at a time that will allow me to rig up a database I need to answer some of the questions. Alas, the load count seems to spell a long night.

Until a supervisor tells me to leave at 7PM. I figure this is a joke--until one of the senior supervisors echoes the order, an order that came from the sort manager.

Now I'm surprised and a bit angry, I'm already short hours and this will only make it worse. But on my way to my car I figure "Well, I may as well get what I wanted to done".

Good idea as from 8PM-10:30PM save for a short break, I'm developing the database and the PHP code to interact with it.

Then this morning I put the finishing touches on the test. The rest is up to the company to decide if I can take the next steps.

Wish me luck.

  FORZA!
This is a word that has popped into my vocabulary this week as Italy gets ready to challenge France for the Soccer World Cup. As you can tell--I'm pulling for my paisanos!

But it seems that I've been on a bit of a roll myself; a project using Google's Map API looks ready to go, I've got a small fanfic inspired by City of Angels percolating, and I may have a strong lead on a job.

How I got to it is a bit complex. The Idealist.org web page had a posting for a development manager job with a web consulting firm that works with progressive organizations and companies. I put in for that, and said to consider me for any other positions that may use my skills. I think a Jr. level PHP/MySql developer would suit the bill quite nicely!

Now I'm not getting too excited yet--but it is a step in the right direction:)
