In the midst of the scandals that plague so much of sport, people sometimes forget that it should be all about following a dream. Now I'll admit that this dream is sometimes, and in some environments very often, oversold.
But what about those few cases where the talent and desire are there. My family and I watched it happen with the case of Marcus Mason.
After a stellar career in Maryland, where he ended his career as the all-time leading running yards gainer in Maryland, he headed off to Illinois to further his [American] Football dreams. Some problems with a sports booster, though, had him off the team and looking for a place to play. So he headed to Northeast Ohio and Youngstown State University.
There he would become a star, combining power and speed he would his senior year break several school records and emerge as a candidate for his division's top individual honor:
He would also put the exclamation point on one of the greatest games that YSU and perhaps their division's playoff has ever seen:
All of this led the Washington Redskins to be willing to take a chance on the local product, but the odds seemed stacked against the young man. But Marcus decided to run with his opportunity--and sometime yesterday, he got the call.
